Open Plan Office Space

The trend these days is to go for open plan office space, but is this always the best idea? An open plan office layout looks great on a plan and certainly uses the available space in the most efficient way.
However, staff do not always work most efficiently in this environment and that must be taken into account. It is essential to have quiet rooms where staff can work without distractions when necessary. Work areas need to be split up to a certain extent to avoid the aircraft hangar look.
There is no simple right or wrong on this question, but it is essential that options on layouts are looked at and staff are consulted. This ensures efficiency in terms of space occupied and staff output.
